Monica Morales (00:05):
Hi, everybody. We are coming to you live from New York city from my bedroom. And I’m so excited about that. If you want to talk about jobs, jobs, jobs. I’m gonna say it three times because it’s that important.
Right now, if you’re looking for a job, you want to switch jobs, you’re not happy with your job, you need some tips on how to get a new job. You’re thinking about a new job. This is the show for you, because we want to talk all about that.
We have all the experts. We have people from LA. We have people from New Jersey and we have all the bosses who are watching too. And it’s, it’s amazing. I just want to introduce all of them.
Suzanne O’Brien, if you could just wave, she is the creator of Career Confidence and a Job Search Coach. She’s the person you want to talk to about how to get that gig right now, then we have Vicki Salemi. Did I say it right? Vicki? Did I say it? Okay she’s in New Jersey right now and she is going to be able to talk to us. She’s with Monster. We love monster. They’re amazing. And she’s going to talk to us a little bit about, you know if you’re a college grad, what are some of the hot industries to get into? And then also what’s the process like now, now that we’re in a, you know, with COVID-19 and we’re all coming from our homes, we can’t do that job, search that job interview the way we used to, how has it changed? Vicki’s gonna walk us through that. And of course, Sheree, coming to us from New York City, Sheree’s a boss at Goodwill, the big boss over there. And I think thousands of jobs you’ve been able to place people. You know, what to look for, you know, what to talk about and you know what people are looking for right now – so you can kind of fill us in, especially people with disabilities. So what an all-star cast. But first Elle of course is with us. Elle, my social media maven. But first I really want to talk to you about the CEO of NYCHA. You know, we’ve been covering NYCHA extensively for years now. I spoke to the CEO, guess what? They’re hiring. Talk about the city. The city is hiring right now, hundreds of caretakers, $15 an hour, and they’re hiring right now. He pretty much said, if you put in your application, they put you immediately to work. And you know what caretakers are the backbone pretty much of the staff of public housing here in New York city, and they’re so needed. So talking to him, you know, it got me thinking the city is hiring also contact tracers, they’re hiring thousands of contact tracers. So the city, the government is hiring. Medical facilities are hiring. So it’s really thinking outside the box and thinking about what careers you can get into, especially since the unemployment rate is so high at this time. I wanna start out with Suzanne O’Brien, who is that expert, that job search coach, which I love that title Suzanne, I don’t know how you get that title, but I mean, the obvious question is, “is this a bad time to get a new job?”
Suzanne O’Brien (02:50):
Not at all. A lot of people come to me with that question and the answer that I give everyone is: You don’t need to get 10 jobs. You need to find the one job that’s right for you. And now could be the perfect time for that job, and that job might be there waiting for you. So now is 100% the time that you should be looking. If you’re not employed, there are a lot of new opportunities that are out there. In fact, because of the pandemic there’s plenty of companies that are growing as a result of what we’re facing here. And in fact, as you mentioned, government, there are certain areas of government that are hiring by the hundreds and sometimes even more than that. So there’s certainly a lot of opportunity that is out there and now is a great time to be looking.
Monica Morales (03:39):
I really needed to hear that. And I think, you know, I’m not looking for a job, but I’m definitely thinking always about being my best self. And I’m sure there are people watching who are looking for a job or want to switch jobs. What are those industries that are hot right now? Can you tell us, just tell us.
Suzanne O’Brien (03:56):
Yeah sure. So we mentioned the government already and that they’re, you know, you might not consider yourself or think of yourself as a government worker, but people are transitioning into those roles and, and the government is open and, you know, ready for you to apply.
Healthcare in a lot of fields. You don’t have to be a nurse or a medical doctor to be open to, or to be employable by the healthcare field, you’ve got biotechnology that you know, those companies are also hiring and growing again as a result of the pandemic.
And then technology companies in lots of different areas have experienced actually growth because of what we’re facing right now. And you don’t have to be an engineer to work at any of those companies or a scientist. You know, there’s, there’s jobs in every different area of those businesses. So they are looking and it’s certainly worth taking a look.
And the other thing that I encourage people to do is think of the companies that you and your neighbors and your friends and your family are actually using, or, you know, trying to purchase more from. Those companies are 100% hiring and many of them are hiring in customer service. And so for those of you who want to be able to work from home companies as big as Amazon and as small as something like Spoonflower, which is an online fabric store they’re all hiring customer service representatives. And they, in many of those roles are home-based and you can work from home and work for a company that’s not in your neck of the woods. So lots of opportunity in lots of different areas.
Monica Morales (05:32):
And I liked that you created Career Confidence because I feel like you’re oozing confidence. I think that’s also what is so needed as we need that hope and that little push.
